Earth Observation Center
The Earth Observation Centre (EOC) is a centre of excellence under the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), which conducts research on the impacts of global change through remote sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS) techniques. Aside from researchers of the Faculty, EOC also pools experts from various faculties such as the Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment and the Faculty of Economy.
Members of the EOC have been successful in obtaining international and national grants on research projects in Southeast Asia such as on Land Use and Land Cover Change in Malaysia, Global Observation of Forest Cover Data and Information for Forest Assessment and Management in Southeast Asia, Deforestation and Missing Sink for Carbon, Modeling and Data Integration in the Study of Sediment Plume in Selangor, and Spatial Data and Information for Tropical Forest Assessment and Management. These projects have proved that the EOC is capable of conducting research on the application of earth satellites to confront the challenges in the issues of global changes.
University programs that use the lab RS / GIS conducted by the EOC include a variety of programs and faculties in UKM, including geography, engineering, geology, marine science, environmental science, hydrology and conservation biology.
